Maximizing Ember Mug Battery and Performance

Below are some of the best practices for getting the most out of your Ember’s battery life and ensuring your warm beverage is at its perfect drinking temperature from the first sip to the last drop.

Expected battery life

Ember Mug²

When using your Ember Mug² without the charging coaster, you can expect a battery life of about 1.5 hours with the Ember Mug, 10 oz or 80 minutes with the Ember Mug, 14 oz, at a target temperature of about 135°F (57°C).

Ember Travel Mug²

When using your Ember Travel Mug² without the charging coaster, you can expect a battery life of about three hours at a target temperature of about 135°F (57°C).

The Ember Mug’s battery life may vary significantly depending on a number of factors, including but not limited to: pour temperature, ambient temperature, desired temperature, and if cold additives, such as milk or creamer, were added.

Getting the most out of your Ember’s battery

The Ember’s battery life will vary dramatically depending on the following factors:

Lid Position

For the Ember Travel Mug², the most important factor affecting battery life is whether the lid is on or off. Power consumption with the lid off is approximately double compared to when the lid is on.

Pour Temperature

The Ember’s battery will drain much faster if heaters are being utilized to heat up cold or room temperature liquids vs pouring in liquids that are hotter than the preferred temperature.

Cold Additives

Depending on the amount of cold additives being added, such as milk or creamer, the drink temperature may drop below the set temperature, resulting in the batteries needing to work harder to increase the temperature, therefore reducing the battery life.

Set Temperature

The average temperature of drinking tea or coffee is between 130°F & 135°F. Any higher will require more power from the heaters. Alternatively, drinking lower than 130°F will allow for a slightly longer battery life.

Drink Consumption

As you continue to drink your beverage, the battery will require less and less work to maintain the temperature. It will take more battery to keep a full 8 oz beverage hot the entire time, rather than a beverage that decreases over time.

Ambient Temperature

The colder the environment the Ember is around, the harder your Ember is working to maintain the set temperature.

Preventing cold coffee

When the Ember is paired to the Ember app, the app will notify you when your Ember is about to run out of battery and stop heating. If you are still enjoying your perfect temperature beverage, but your battery is about to run out, simply place the Ember on the plugged in Charging Coaster, and it will continue to maintain your preferred temperature.

When the Ember is placed on the charging coaster with hot liquids inside, it will maintain your current set temperature, while maintaining the current battery level. Once empty, the Ember will charge normally. This is a battery safety setting to ensure your Ember does not overheat the battery when left on the charger for long periods throughout the day with hot liquids inside.

The Ember also has a 2 hour auto shut off if the mug is untouched.

Charging your Ember

To charge your Ember Mug, place the Ember on the plugged-in charging coaster. The Ember Travel Mug² will display a partially-filled, pulsing battery indicator on the LED display when charging and show a full battery when fully charged and ready to use. The Ember Mug² will display a pulsing red light when it is charging and turn solid green when fully charged and ready for use. The Ember’s exact battery life can be viewed at any time within the ‘Settings’ section of the Ember app. A depleted battery can take up to two hours to fully charge the Ember.

Is the Ember Safe to Charge Overnight?

The Ember is 100% safe to keep on the charger when you are not using it. When the battery is fully charged the charging is shut off automatically so no battery damage will occur. We have something called ‘maintenance charging’ which means that if left on the coaster for months on end the battery is periodically topped off because the battery slowly self-discharges and no harm is done.

On the contrary, the Ember should be charged every couple of months even if it is not in use. Otherwise the battery may become over discharged and could be permanently damaged.

Additional Tips and Information

Update to the latest software and firmware

Ember is constantly improving the software and firmware the mugs run on. We always recommend updating to the latest software and firmware via the Ember app for best performance. While this doesn't necessarily mean you’ll get better battery life with these updates, many of the improvements will focus on the battery such as: how the battery charges to increase the longevity of its lifespan, the battery’s accuracy, how battery life is being displayed on the app or mug itself, and overall improvements to efficiency and safety.

Do not dispose of the battery by crushing, cutting, or exposing to fire or high temperature, as an explosion can result.

Do not expose the battery to high temperature or extremely low air pressure, as leakage of flammable material or an explosion can occur.
